FAQs
What is powdered kava?
Powdered kava is a finely ground product made from the dried root of the noble kava plant, a traditional crop native to the Pacific Islands. Revered for centuries, powdered kava is prepared by grinding the root into a fine consistency, which is then mixed with water to create a traditional drink used to relax. At Root & Pestle, we use only 100% noble kava, organically grown in Vanuatu, and processed in a HACCP-certified facility to ensure premium quality.
How do I prepare powdered kava?
We sell two types of powdered kava. The Traditional Grind version requires you to mix water with the powder in a strainer bag, place it in a bowl and squeeze for several minutes before straining and using the liquid. Our Instant Kava Powder is ready to mix directly with water. Detailed instructions can be found on our Kava Preparation page.
How strong is powdered kava compared to other forms?
Strength varies by cultivar, preparation and serving size. The traditional grind typically produces a fuller and smoother result due to manual extraction. Instant kava, on the other hand, is more convenient, but may have a different texture or onset time. To ensure each experience remains consistent regardless of form, our cultivars are tested for kavalactone content.
How should I store powdered kava?
Once you buy kava powder in Australia, keep it fresh by storing it in an airtight container, away from heat, sunlight and moisture. When properly stored and unopened, our, kava powder has a shelf life of around three years.
Can I use powdered kava to mix directly with water?
Our traditional grind as well as our instant kavas are usually prepared using water, but you can also experiment using other liquids such as juice or coconut water. Only our Instant Kava Powder is suitable for direct mixing with water and consuming without straining. Traditional grind kava must be prepared using a strainer bag and kneaded by hand to extract its active compounds. These two types of kava serve different needs and preferences, so check the label before preparing your kava.
